nice to meet you!

as you can see in fig. 1 and fig. 2, dessert has always been a huge part of my life. being born and raised in new orleans definitely spoiled me in many ways. i still miss the sucré hot chocolate and raspberry bombe (however, i made a damn good copy of it for my mom for christmas this year, if i do say so myself).

but if there’s one thing i like more than eating dessert, it’s making it for others. i love to create unique flavor combinations that aren’t easily found at your typical bakery and sharing them with the people i adore. ask anyone in my family, my friends, or my neighbors, and they’ll tell you christmas isn’t christmas if i haven’t given them copious amounts of my lemon earl grey sugar cookies—and if you haven’t tried them yet, trust me, you will soon enough.

while i was in college earning my art history degree (hey msu aahd and cal look at your super cool alumni!) i would oftentimes be in charge of making the desserts for potlucks, friends’ birthday cakes… you name it, i was making it. and every single time without fail, i would always hear, “you know, you should open your own baking business!”

i usually brushed it off as people being nice, but after realizing the typical art history path of museum worker or professor wasn’t the life for me, i ended up taking on jobs here and there, trying to find the thing that felt right for me. i’ve done my fair share of teaching, all the way from elementary to college, and i especially loved being a theatre teacher and working with teenagers to put together a show we were all proud of. eventually though, i got a job as a barista, and was able to start baking there, flexing my creativity and getting true strangers’ (!!!) opinions on what i was baking: and the resounding response was that, yeah, i probably should start that baking business.

so, here we are, taking the leap and doing the thing that feels right. i absolutely could not being doing this without the unending support of my family, my friends, and especially my sweet little lady, thomasin. i’m so excited to share my treats with the world, and i’m honored that you’re choosing to support my small business.

i also want to stress that it’s not lost on me that you’re supporting a woman owned, lesbian owned business. in times like these, it’s so important to support our community and lift each other up, and i can’t thank you enough for doing so. while From the Night Kitchen is my dream, i want it to also be a spot of happiness, representation, and joy in yours.

all my love,

scout 🖤
